Middle Earth AdventureFrequently Asked Questions1. How do I get to New Zealand? Travel to New Zealand requires no Visa (however Australia does), and takes approximately 12 hours from Los Angeles and approximately 24 hours from Europe. Your welcome pack will have great tips about reducing your jet lag! Many airlines come to New Zealand. All adventures are planned "off season" and therefore airfares are less than high season (Christmas and U.S/European summer). A good travel agent will be able to search for a variety of options for you. If you have frequent flyer miles, 60,000 miles will usually cover a round trip from the U.S. Another good point is that this trip will also "give you" approximately 25,000 frequent flyer miles for your next trip! 2. How do I know if I am fit enough to participate? This trip requires a moderate level of fitness. The longest days (first and last), you will have your pack carried for you. Therefore, you will have to carry your pack the two short days, unless you opt for bag carry for two middle days at additional cost. This trail was not designed for the hard core "backpacker", instead it gives a challenge but not "difficult". There are no rivers to cross, rocks to scale, no spiders, snakes, or anything that could be a "danger" to you. There are slopes to climb and descents but all of these are done at your own pace. Your Welcome Pack has detailed fitness info prepared by a personal trainer. 3. How soon should I buy my ticket? As soon as you are sure you want to go and know that there are a minimum of 5 signed up. I will inform you of numbers, when you make your deposit. I will cancel the trip (fully refund your deposit) in adequate time for your own travel arrangements. (To date, no trips have been cancelled.) Your travel agent again is your best guide for this information. S/he will know if there are upcoming reductions in airfare. 4. What things will I need to have for this trip (that I might not already have)? You will need a good pair of hiking boots/shoes, a light weight sleeping bag, a well fitting backpack, walking stick, and a light, collapsible, day pack for days 2 & 3 on the trail, adequate clothing for all weathers (required) . Detailed information is available in the Welcome Pack. 5. Should I buy travel insurance? Yes, to cover refunds if you cannot make the trip. 6. What about health insurance? Check with your own carrier. Most do not cover you overseas. However, if you have an "accident", New Zealand has coverage for tourists via our accident and compensation insurance. Further insurance coverage becomes a personal choice. 7. What are the temperatures/weather in March? October is our Spring and you will experience Warm days and cool nights. Days may be 55-65° F and nights may be 40-50° F. Accomodations have wood stoves for heating, if needed. January and February trips are our summer. Days may be 65-75 F and nights may be 45-55 F. Since New Zealand is an island, weather changes are always a possibility. Rain is always a possibility. You will have detailed information about clothing to bring in your welcome package. 8. What if I have dietary restrictions? In the group meals, we will attempt to accommodate as best we can. You will always have a vegetarian choice. We will be providing health conscious meals on all days of the trip. You may bring some food to accomodate your own special needs. Immigration is very strict about foods coming into New Zealand. No fresh fruit or vegetables are allowed. A limited amount of packaged food can be brought but must be CLEARLY declared on the forms when entering the country. All prescription medicines must be clearly labeled with your name. Please email me with any particular need you have. 9. Will I spend all my time hiking? No, you will have one day of inner journey work and group coaching before the trek. The trek consists of two long days, which will take around 5-6 hrs and two short days of 3-4 hours. This allows you to wander, read, beach walk, journal, visit, or whatever your heart desires. |
